Berniece M. Carey, 90, formerly of Girard, died Sunday October 25, 2009 at Ball Pavilion.
Berniece was born November 5, 1918 in Nanty Glo, Cambria County,PA., a daughter of the late Lawrence and Anna Pustelak.
Before retiring Berniece was the Girard agent for the Erie Times News for 29 years. She and her husband, Lee, also owned and operated the Hillcrest Restaurant in Girard for 15 years. She was a fabulous cook and was known for her delicious homemade pies. Berniece loved sports and was a big fan of Girard High School basketball where she was known as one of the infamous "Golden Girls". She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially playing cards.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Lee S. Carey in 1977 and whom she married September 13, 1937 in Erie also by two sisters, Helen Sprague and Mary Bogdanski; three brothers, Joseph, Stanley and John Pustelak; and a daughter in law Patricia Carey.
Survivors include three sons, James J. Carey and his wife Annemarie of Erie, Leo D. Carey of Phoenix, AZ., Donald S. Carey and his wife Linda of Girard; five grandchildren, Jessica and Jennifer Carey, Natalie Jessip and her husband Chris, Michelle Carey, and April Decker and her husband Luke; a great grandaughter McKenna Cook and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 2-4PM and 7-9PM at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. A Prayer Service will be held there on Wednesday at 10:30AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 101 Olin Ave., Girard at 11AM.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Girard.
