William F. Theil Sr., 86 of East Springfield, died Wednesday February 17, 2010 at his home following an extended illness.
He was born March 19, 1923 in Mentor, OH., a son of the late Jacob and Mina Piper Theil.
He was raised and educated in the North Springfield area. As America was at war, Bill was inducted into the US Army, where he served in the 97th Signal Battalion in the European Theater of operations. While serving behind enemy lines, he was captured and remained a prisoner of war until the surrender of the German Army. Following his discharge from the military he returned to the Springfield area and began working at Union Carbide in Ashtabula, most recently as a foreman for the diesel mechanic garage.
He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard and was active in Senior League Baseball as Coach and Umpire in the Albion/Springfield League. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and was an avid outdoorsman.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son in law, Ronald Komorek; his twin sister, Wilma Diehl, sisters, Frances Piper, Marie Dister, and Katherine Kinninger; his brothers, Robert, Fred and Carl Theil.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Yolanda M. Golop Theil; two daughters, Linda F. Komorek of Erie, Antoinette Switzer and her husband William of Peewee Valley, KY.; two sons, William F. Theil Jr. of China Grove, NC, Anthony E. Theil of North Springfield; a daughter in law, Nadine Theil of Ocean Isle, NC; four grandchildren, Kristin Komorek, Mathew Switzer, William Switzer Jr., Christopher Theil and his wife Karen; a great grandaughter, Morgan Theil and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4PM and 7-9PM at Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. East, Girard. Services wil be held there on Saturday at 10AM.
Internment will follow with full military honors at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
