James "Daniel" Bean, 63 of Cranesville, died suddenly on Wednesday January 9, 2019 in Syracuse while visiting family.
He was born September 2, 1955 in Erie, a son of the late Carl and Barbara E. (Hall) Bean.
Dan graduated from Fairview High School in 1974 and soon after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Forrestal (CV-59), during deployment to the Mediterranean Sea; his last duty station was with Attack Squadron 174. He was honorably discharged in 1981 and received the Good Conduct Award and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
Following his military service he returned home and worked at various manufacturing companies in the area. Dan began his secondary education at Edinboro University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education. He taught many years, at various schools for the North West Tri County Intermediate Unit in Edinboro, retiring in 2015.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Erie where he sang in the choir and a former long time member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Girard. Dan was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Albion Council #3979, a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Girard Council #5430, a 4th degree member of Assembly #0983 and a long time Boy Scout leader in the Albion and Girard area.
Dan was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, kayaking and camping with his family. He could often be found in his garage, tinkering with an engine or fixing something for a friend.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Nathan "Ed" Bean and Thomas Bean.
He will be greatly missed by his family, which includes his wife, Jacqueline A. (Turton) Bean. whom he married September 18, 1982 in Coudersport, PA; three sons, David A. Buzard (Kristina) of Syracuse, NY, Christopher J. Bean of Cranesville, Andrew C. Bean of Canonsburg, PA; a sister, Sharon Heidecker (David) of Erie; three brothers, Joseph Bean ( Barb) of Erie, Richard "Dick" Bean (Betty) of Cranesville, Jon Bean of Erie and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Edder Funeral Home Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard on Wednesdayfrom 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church , 1626 W. 26th St, Erie on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Philip Pinczewski officiating.
Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery Girard with full military honors.
