Deborah "Debbie" (Schmitz) Masterson

Deborah Jo Masterson, 68, of Girard, PA, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, May 27th, 2023. Formerly of Warren, PA, she was born on December 3rd, 1954, the daughter of Robert and Ruth Schmitz who preceded her in death.

Debbie’s eyes shined so bright with love and her heart was always open. She attended Penn State Behrend, receiving a degree in Business. It was here she met John Masterson, the man who would capture her heart. They moved to Warren, PA where Debbie would attend nursing school and become an LPN for Warren General Hospital. As the couple welcomed their third child, they decided to move to Fairview, PA where Debbie would step away from nursing to become a homemaker in a class by herself.

Debbie was more than happy to be a central figure in the lives of her children. Her home was the hub where all would gather for fun and celebrations and in Debbie’s eyes, love and dreams. This would continue as Debbie became a grandmother, allowing her to coin her signature nickname ‘Grandma Goddess.’ She would often speak about how “being a mother was the most important job in the world but being a grandmother is the most fun.”

Debbie also had a passion for Pittsburgh sports that was unmatched. She never missed a televised Pirates game, ensuring everyone knew when victory was achieved by sending her famous ‘Raise the Jolly Roger’ text. Back-to-back Penguins championships was a never-ending celebration and tribute in her home.

Family and friends will forever be reminded of Debbie anytime they see a flamingo. Just like Debbie, these birds stand out in a crowd, spend time with their flock, show their true colors and find the right balance. It’s no coincidence she treated them as her sprit animal.

Debbie is survived by her loving children; daughter Emily and her husband Rick Lawrence, their daughters Ashlyne, Grace and Abbie of Meadville, PA; son Robert Masterson of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter Bethany and her husband Kyle Kleinedler, and their children Charlotte, John and Declan of Fairview, PA; her sister Terrie Tucker (John) of Martinsburg, WV; sister Janet Lyle (Ted Passmore) of Warren, PA; plus her many nieces and nephews.

Viewing ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 1st from 4pm – 7pm at Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St., Girard, PA 16417. Service will begin at 7pm. The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made in the name of Debbie Masterson to Shiners Hospital’s for Children – Erie, 1645 W. 8th Street, Erie, PA. 16505.  

Lastly, keep Debbie’s signature sign-off in your hearts and remember to “always choose kindness.”
