Robert H. Pier, 78, of Lake City, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 1, 2021 at St.Vincent Health Center.
He was born January 4, 1942 in Erie, a son of the late Harold and Elsie (Fiesler) Pier.
Bob graduated from the Rice Avenue Union High School in 1960. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Guantanamo Bay Cuba, serving there during the Cuban Missile Crisis that occurred in October of 1962. Bob was accredited with over three years of foreign service with the Navy and upon his honorable discharge, returned home to the Lake City.
He began employment with Town-Square, which eventually became Rich’s Frozen Foods. He retired from there as Maintenance Supervisor in 2000 following 35 years with the company. While employed there, he and Bud Platz began the local business, Elk Creek Sports, which they eventually sold.
He was a member of the Girard American Legion Post#494, Chairman of the Lake City Municipal Sewer Authority and loved his group of very close friends that met at Wendy’s Restaurant. Bob loved fishing throughout his life, loved spending time with his family, gardening, growing his famous garlic simply mowing the yard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Giacabello and a brother, Harry Pier.
Bob will be greatly missed by his family, which include his wife, Mary Jo (Lane) Pier, whom he married, December 26, 1999 in Lake City; his daughter, Holly A. Shaffer (Stacy) of Sheffield; four sons, David R. Pier of Girard, Steven H. Pier (Carrie) of Raleigh, NC, Greg S. Nelson (Terri) of Erie, Michael D. Nelson (Dr. Mariatu) of Fairfax, VA; the mother of his children, Judy Lynch (Robert) of Sheffield; twelve grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Due to Covid-19 services will be held privately by the family.
